Variable Speed Drives and Frequency Drives

VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) and VSDs (Variable Speed Drives) are devices that control an electric motor's speed. VFDs work specifically with AC motors by adjusting the frequency of the electricity to control speed. VSDs can handle both AC and DC motors, using voltage adjustments for DC motors.

Working Principle:

  • Input Conversion: VFDs take fixed AC power and convert it to DC using a rectifier.
  • Smoothing: The DC output is filtered by capacitors to create a smooth DC supply.
  • Output Conversion: An inverter changes DC back to AC with variable frequency to control motor speed.
  • Speed Control: By adjusting the frequency or voltage, the motor's speed is precisely controlled.
